STEREO: The Sun in 3-D

Twin satellites are on their way to investigating the origin of special solar storms erupting from the sun. Known as "coronal mass ejections," these storms travel at nearly 1 million mph and can knock out power on the ground. The STEREO spacecraft are to be delivered to opposite sides of Earth. There STEREO will map

the structure of the storms in 3-D as they leave the sun and flow around the planet.

IAU Resolution Pluto No Longer a Planet

Aug. 24, 2006 - A "planet" is now defined as a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. This means that the Solar System consists of eight "planets" Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. A new distinct class of objects called "dwarf planets" was also decided. It was agreed that "planets" and "dwarf planets" are two distinct classes of objects.
